A Grand Day on the Grand Union Canal

Children take to the water in Brentford

175 children from six schools close to the Grand Union Canal in Brentford took to the water in July in canoe sessions organised by British Waterways and sponsored by ISIS Waterside Regeneration. As the summer holiday approaches it is important for all children to learn how to enjoy the water safely so these sessions were organised as part of a water safety campaign. All the children learnt how to be water wise by spotting hazards and learning how to help. The excellent canoe instructors provided by Brentford Football Club Community Sports Trust made sure the children had a fantastic time on the water in a safe environment. In a busy, fun-packed day the children also built and tested model balloon powered boats – not as easy as it sounds. Many of the children enjoyed this taster session so much that they will be coming back for more during canoe club sessions on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. Of course all the children all went home happy with a WOW water safety leaflet!
