WOW volunteers take to the towpath in Devizes
Local school learn about the locks and visit the Canal Museum at Devizes Wharf
Four WOW volunteers braved the November cold to lead a class of Year 5 children along the towpath of the Kennet & Avon Canal to The Canal Museum at Devizes Wharf.
On the walk they demonstrated how the top lock of the Caen Hill flight works and showed the children one of the pill boxes built along the canal during the second world war. The children used the new WOW museum trail http://www.wow4water.net/media/images/2858.pdf to explore the museum and the volunteers helped them to build a model canal and investigate some of the cargoes carried by boat including spices, tea and manure!
This session is hopefully the first of many where WOW volunteers work with the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust to encourage schools to visit the canal and the museum.
